Paper Plane
The Paper Plane cocktail was created in 2008 by bartender Sam Ross for The Violet Hour in Chicago, as a modern riff on the classic Last Word cocktail. Named after the popular M.I.A. song "Paper Planes," Ross developed the drink using equal parts bourbon, Aperol, Amaro Nonino, and lemon juice. An earlier version, also created by Ross for The Violet Hour, used Campari instead of Aperol, but Ross later swapped it out for a less bitter profile that better suited the drink's balanced, sweet-and-bitter taste.
Gypsy Queen Martini
The Gypsy Queen Martini, a post-prohibition vodka cocktail, originated in the mid-1930s at New York's Russian Tea Room, aiming to promote the exotic spirit. Made with vodka, Bénédictine, and orange bitters, its popularity was short-lived as World War II sparked a shift toward American-made spirits. The cocktail is known for showcasing the complex, herbal sweetness of Bénédictine with vodka as a base, and its emergence marks one of the earliest instances of vodka featuring in a cocktail in the U.S.
